負の数の平方根の存在が初めて認められたのは16世紀になってからだ。
３次方程式のベキ根による解法を通じて、全てが変わった。カルダーノは負の数を信じないので、彼の公式をx^3 = 9x+2のような方程式には応用できないとカルダーノはみなした。しかしこれらすべてはBombelliボンベリによって変えられた。ボンベリは複素数のための微積分学を発展させた。
1572年ボンベリは、虚数を定義した。（+ √−1）（+ √−1）= −1および（+ √−1）（− √−1）= 1、そして特定の複素数の加法と乗法を定義した。これが複素数の誕生だった。
1831年ガウスによって虚数という言葉が定着した。複素数平面をガウス平面という。ちなみに高校までは複素数平面というが、大学に入ると複素平面という。この言い方の違いがわからない。
